NDA Finalises Assam Seat Sharing 2026: BJP to Contest 89 Seats, Allies Get Key Share

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has officially sealed its seat-sharing agreement for the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections 2026. The BJP will contest 89 out of 126 seats, while allies AGP and BPF have been allocated 26 and 11 seats respectively, signaling a strategic push for a third consecutive term.

In a major political development ahead of the Assam Assembly Elections 2026, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has finalized its seat-sharing formula, reinforcing its electoral strategy in the northeastern state. As per the agreement, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest 89 seats, while its alliance partners — Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) — will field candidates in 26 and 11 constituencies respectively. The decision was taken after a high-level meeting of the BJP’s Assam core committee held in New Delhi. Key leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda, were present during the discussions, indicating the importance of the upcoming polls. With a total of 126 assembly seats in Assam, the NDA’s seat distribution highlights a calculated attempt to maintain dominance while ensuring alliance cohesion. Elections are scheduled to be held in a single phase on April 9, with vote counting set for May 4.

The BJP, which has been ruling Assam since 2016, is aiming for a third consecutive term, banking on its governance record and strong alliance network. Political analysts suggest that the current seat-sharing formula reflects both strategic consolidation and confidence within the NDA camp. The inclusion of AGP and BPF in the alliance continues to play a crucial role in regional representation, particularly in areas like the Bodoland Territorial Region. The distribution also signals the NDA’s intent to balance regional aspirations with a broader electoral strategy. As election dates approach, all eyes are now on candidate announcements and campaign strategies. With opposition alliances also gearing up, the Assam elections are expected to witness intense political competition in the coming weeks.
